The author in her mother's fur at the Mischen Holiday Event at Mick Margo. | December 13th, 2007, New York - I have a confession.
I own at least 10 coats, and that doesn't even include jackets or blazers or other pre-winter wear. The fact is, like most New Yorkers, I complain about my lack of closet space, but at the end of the day that doesn't stop me from stocking up on at least one or two new coats each season. But did you know that 90% of New York's homeless adults need a new coat each winter because they have no place to store one over the summer? Probably not, but when you see people shivering on the sidewalks, huddling in the subway tunnels, and climbing into their cardboard boxes at night, you pull your own coat just a bit tighter, thinking "what can I do?"
So last year, in the midst of all the holiday materialism, the Mick Margo coat drive was born. It's really quite simple: bring a gently used coat (please no old t-shirts and sweatpants) to Mick Margo thru December 31st and we'll make sure that someone who needs a coat, gets a coat. It's all part of the New York Cares Coat Drive, and Mick Margo for the second year in a row is serving as a coat collection site. Last year we donated over 100 coats to New York Cares, that means 100 people were warmer, 100 people were grateful, and 100 of you have more room in your closet.
So get a coat, give a coat. - Meredith Fisher
